Summer 2018 Haiti Wrap Up

Bonswa from Haiti!

Friday was our last day of clinic and we decided to pray with the whole team and all of our translators before we started. One of the translators, Samuel, decided that we should do a “Haitian prayer” where we all pray out loud at the same time. It was really touching hearing Creole and English all proclaiming the name of Jesus at the same time; you could just feel the presence of the Holy Spirit.

One of the patients that Nicole and I helped with was a 2-year old sweet baby girl named Angelica who was having some extreme developmental delay and malnourishment (she was the size of a 6-month old). I tried to help figure out what to do with her functionally since lack of eating was the biggest concern. We got her a Bumbo seat so that feeding and head control could hopefully develop. Nicole and Elliot also made an awesome wedge for her to prop on while she was doing tummy time to strengthen her muscles. It was pretty cool getting to educate her mom about ways to help feed her so that hopefully she will gain some weight and become more mobile.

Tyler, Lucas, Jordan and Amanda had an awesome opportunity to go do a home visit with a lady who had a very recent stroke and was pretty limited in her functionality. They were able to get her a wheelchair and teach her family how to better take care of her.

We shut down clinic around 1:30 because no other patients were coming in due to the soccer game (Brazil vs. Belgium). It is WAY out of the norm if you are not a Brazil soccer fan in Haiti. We walked into the house and there were about 40 people there screaming and yelling at the tiny TV (sometimes color, sometimes black and white). It was really cool getting to see everyone run down the street after a goal was scored. Amidst all of the brokenness here, there are undeniable moments of joy that make it worth it.

This week's greatest service was that several patients, even the last patient of the day on Friday, received Christ. In the end, the team completed its mission of providing medical care to the people of Carrefour and also providing hope through the only true Healer of the soul - Jesus Christ.
