Wrapping up the Week

The Lima team has wrapped up the week with mixed feelings - satisfied with the work done and needs met, and sad that it is over, but looking forward to some R & R in Cusco and Machu Picchu this weekend. God provided and showed Himself to be good in so many ways this week! Enjoy these pictures from the end of the ministry week.

More From Thanksgiving

Even though today was one of the most disorganized days we have had so far, it was one of my favorites! It was one of those days where absolutely nothing goes according to plan. It was a day of full reliance on the Lord to get us to where He wanted us. We ended up leaving 3 hours later than we planned, but we ended up getting some really quality worship time that I think we all really needed. We were at Ancon today and one of my favorite patients was a woman who was a diabetic amputee who we were able to fit with a walker and a wheelchair and get her much more mobile! We had a long bus ride back to the convent but then had thanksgiving dinner waiting for us when we got back! All in all today was a great reminder of the way that the Lord can use the worst of situations and turn them into a chance for Him to display His almighty power in our lives.  -Katie 

Lastly, Sam's backpack (including his passport) is lost. Please pray that it is found.  

Thursday - Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving from Peru!! Today we are thankful God is in control. Between the bus being 2 1/2hrs late, then breaking down and finally getting stopped by the police it was a hectic morning. But God is in control. He alone knew exactly what was going on and why. All we could do in that moment was put our trust in Him and His perfect plan (Romans 8:28; Jeremiah 29:11) So we lifted up all these things that were out of our control to Him and sang Alabare a mi señor (Praise The Lord). We arrived at the clinic to a hallway full of patients and got straight to work fitting orthotics, educating patients, and adjusting wheelchairs. We were able to see almost 30 patients in 3hrs!! God is so good!! It is such a joy to watch the patients leave the clinic with a huge smile on their face! Although the day did not go as we planned, it went as God planned, and we are still so thankful we got to serve so many people with the time we had!!

Today, like everyday this week was truly inspirational. To be able to provide a disabled child with what is needed to enable them to take their first steps is such an amazing experience. I am so thankful for all the people I have met and helped so far on this trip. What we are doing on this mission trip is changing the lives of the less fortunate people we serve by offering our knowledge and time. What we can provide in an hour can alter the course of another persons life for years to come. This is my first mission trip and it has given me such an appreciation for fellow missionary's that go out in the world to do Gods work. It feels so good to give back after all the blessings that I have received in my lifetime. You can truly never out give God. This has been the best learning experience of my life and I encourage others to grow in their spiritual path by reaching out to others. I know that many people reading this blog contributed to this trip and I could not be more grateful for you. It all helps so much more than you could ever know.

Day 2 In the Clinic

Today was another wonderful day at the Shalom clinic. In our various groups we were able to treat many patients and hand out equipment according to their needs. Danielle and I worked with Jerry a graduate of SBU who currently works with stroke patients. We treated adult patients ranging with needs of home exercise program, stretches, nerve glides and a wheelchair change. At the end of each of our therapy sessions we were able to ask patients for prayer request and pray for them. We were able to apply a lot of our knowledge from Musculoskeletal, Therapeutic Exercise and what we knew about wheelchairs. Overall the clinic went really smooth today and we were able to help other groups out where we saw the need for more hands. We are all looking forward to spending our last day at Shalom and helping everyone who are scheduled to come tomorrow. Thank you all for your prayers take care and God Bless!! -Jessica

The MMI clinic at Shalom opened today! We broke up into teams and did all sorts of things- ranging from wheelchair fittings, general exercises for back pain, and orthotic fittings. Rachel and I got to work with one of our Peds therapists, Jenna. Jenna is a recent grad and was a ton of fun to work with. We are learning so much from her. Today I used my orthotic making skills and fit three children with AFOs! I had to use the heat gun and everything to flare out those edges, so thanks Dr. Jones for teaching me that! For our last patient of the day, Jenna gave Rachel and I the reigns and let us do everything. This young man had an in-toe gait and had weak lower extremities, so Rachel and I gave him some exercises to work on his strength and then fitted him with an orthotic to help control his pronation. He was our first "real" patient, and I don't think either one of us will forget him! We were also able to pray for him and his family. Thank you all for your prayers! Day 1 Sunday

We made it safely to Lima bright and early at 5:45 this morning! Huge praise that all of our luggage and supplies made it and customs was fast and fairly smooth. Once we arrived at the convent we hit the ground running. We were able to meet the other therapists on the trip with us, ate breakfast and then loaded the bus to head to Shalom. Once at Shalom we attended church service (it is always such an awesome experience to see how the love and worship of Christ transcends all language barriers) and then began setting up the clinic for the week ahead. Once we got back from the clinic we were able to explore a little bit and go to the beach. We ate dinner (which was SO GOOD) and talked about what our week ahead will look like. Needless to say it's been a busy day and we are all exhausted. Be in prayer for the team for calm nerves and peace as we start our first day in the clinic tomorrow and for team chemistry as we continue to grow and work together to fulfill the Lord's calling to serve the beautiful people of Lima.
